SanDisk: 500GB SSD in Near Future is Reality Now

SanDisk Logo

In the current difficult market conditions, many flash memory manufacturers are experiencing serious problems and have a vague future. But there are other producers that do not stop investing into developing of new technologies and trying to improve their production with even more intensivity. One of them – the SanDisk company which is amonst the leaders in the production of SSDs. Recently company announced two new technologies that can have a significant impact on the market for solid state drives. SandDisk unveiled the first 32nm chips and the first 4-bit cell flash memory. These developments would help the company soon reach a 500GB mark for SSD and even surpass it.

Together with Toshiba the SanDisk company spoke about these new technologies at ISSCC 2009. It was also stated that on the basis of that new technologies Toshiba and SamDisk are already working on reducing production costs and on increasing of the capacity flash memory devices. According to SanDisk, 32nm chips will at least as fast as the current 43nm chips which were shown for the first time at ISSCC 2008 exactly one year ago. This technology uses the old 3-bit memory cells which will allow quickly and easily introduce new technological processes in production. Based on this technology will soon be issued Compact Flash and SDHC cards with capacity up to 64GB. High-end solid state drives which would contain up to half terabyte of information are also on its way to consumers.

Samsung also was pleased with announced tehcnology. Samsung noted that new 32nm production methods will signigicantly improve the characteristics of microSD cards, which are mostly used in cellphones and other compact devices. Because of the very small size of microSD cards the die size is one of the most important factors in its production. And SanDisk with help of its new technology will be able to double the capacity of microSD cards. The area of 32GB 32nm chip will be just a 113mm2. Mass production of new chips will begin in the second half of 2009.

Another one new technology – 4-bit memory cell. It is also will affect the flash memory industry. It can reduce the cost of SSDs in the future. And now high price is the barrier to solid state drives global spreading. Date of introduction “X4″ technology is not yet known.

Trident’s Triton FSE SSD: Solid State Drive In Military Service.

Trident Space & Defence company unveiled its plans to go in SSD market with special device suitable for military application. It is well known that SSD endure hard conditions much better then traditional HDD. As solid state drives don’t have moving parts it can easily go through shock, vibration, dust, moisture and extreme temperatures without any harm. And that’s the characteristics that any military device needs.

Housed in a machined aluminum alloy case new Trident’s SSDs are based on industrial-grade SLC NAND Flash memory and will be available in capacity up to 128GB. That ruggedized enclosure in 2.5 inch SATA or PATA form factor makes Triton FSE (Fast\Secure Erase) SSDs ideal replacement for current hard disks that can barely resist harsh environments. Triton FSE SSD Series also have capability completely destroy all information aboard and make it unreadable in a moment, that is important requirement for military information storage device.

Trident Space & Defense is a Veteran-Owned, Small Business Company. It is an ISO9001:2000 certified and Department of State registered manufacturer. Originally established in 1976 as part of TRW, Trident is well positioned to build on a proven legacy of 30 successful years in supporting over 100 major Space, Military and high reliability Industrial programs.

Transcend Improves Its SSD Technology: TS192GSSD25S-M

Transcned LogoDespite the difficulties caused by the global financial crisis, a Transcend Information company isn’t going to deviate from their plans for the development of the solid state drives. Taiwan manufacturer officially announced the release of a new 2.5-inch SSD with SATA-II interface. Transcend product line is now represented not only the models with capacity of 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128GB but now also 192GB is available and that SSD will be known as TS192GSSD25S-M.

Novelty refers to the current generation of solid state drives based on multilevel (Multi-Level Cell, MLC) flash memory chips NAND-type. According to the developers, the use of high-density MLC-chips in a pair with a new production controller will further improve the speed of drives. The speed of the serial read and write was able to bring up to 150 and 90Mb/s, respectively, slightly higher than the previous model with capacity 128 GB has. It should also be noted that Transcend implemented error correction ECC (Error Correcting Code) in its solid state drives, which allows to detect and correct errors in data transmission.

Transcend Press Service reports that the new SSD-disk 192 GB should be on sale immediately after the announcement. Some online stores have already started taking orders. For example, a German sellers ask 332 euro for the right to possession of a fast, reliable and quiet drive. However, you can order new SSD and on the official website of the manufacturer. In that case the value of new items without taxes is $614.
